Spiritmaker.
Garage Punk! The Age... live at Redruth/Cambourne, Cornwall.
Left to right: Simon Tooth, Harry, Swaz, Cape.
I started Spiritmaker in 1999. The words were written down roughly on the usual scraps of paper. When we went into the studio, The Age began playing and the words became clear.
I arranged the lyrics in a simple way. That is not always so easy. The music's perfect for them. The words fly to me in moments, over time, as though from above. I do spend a lot of time on the words - what is the point otherwise? They take time, the majority come in a chunk but I wait for the rest to fall in to place.
Often the main theme comes very quickly and I scribble at speed. Wonky World was like that. Instant! And it is a bit like a cartoon script. It's true that I wrote the chorus about our chemistry teacher at KIng Edward High School, Morpeth. He put my head in a fume cupboard with sodium as a punishment for laughing or breaking a test tube; Mr. Milner! Tut-tut-tut.
Wonky World
Trees forgive us for our energy we just seemed to lose it, the whole idea, I don't know how we did it, it must have been there once, or maybe this is just a big experiment...
'Chemistry teacher - you never said it was gonna be like this... It's a wonky world.'
Words come through...? Well I don't want to go all Uri Geller/Doris Stokes on you (respect to both) but poets, writers and artists are channels. This tune is wonderful as just voice and piano too.
